The Program

Destination Australia funds eligible tertiary education providers to offer scholarships to domestic and international students to study and live in regional Australia.

The Destination Australia Program:

  • Supports regional and remote Australian tertiary education providers by promoting activities that contribute to growth and sustainability
  • Offers students from Australia and overseas the opportunity to undertake high quality education, training and research, and to experience life in regional and remote Australia
  • Ensures regions share in the social, cultural and economic benefits that international students bring.

The Destination Australia Program was first announced as part of the Australian Government’s Planning for Australia's Future Population on 20 March 2019. Scholarship funding of $15,000 per year for approximately 380 students is available for Round 3 of the program, for domestic and international students commencing their study in 2022.

Eligible providers can apply for Round 3 of the Destination Australia Program via the Community Grants Hub. Applications for Round 3 grant funding will close on 15 June 2021.

Information for education providers: Destination Australia 2021

On 29 April 2021, the Minister for Education and Youth the Hon Alan Tudge MP, and the Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education the Hon Andrew Gee MP announced that higher education and vocational education providers with a campus in regional Australia could apply for scholarships of up to $15,000 per year for students to study at that campus from 2022.

In 2022, the program will help regional and remote Australian education providers and communities to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing students and economic activity to the local area.

The Destination Australia Program defines a regional location as any area outside of Major Cities of Australia, in line with the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Australian Statistical Geography Standard Remoteness Structure.

The Destination Australia: Round 3 Program Guidelines set out eligibility, application and other requirements for the grant round.
