On Friday 11 December 2020, the Hon Ken Wyatt, Minister for Indigenous Australians and the Hon Dan Tehan, Minister for Education, jointly chaired a meeting of Education and Indigenous Affairs Ministers from across Australia.
The meeting provided an opportunity to share experiences and to identify opportunities to work together in partnership to boost outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, particularly to improve school attendance and educational outcomes.
Ministers recognised that while there have been improvements in recent years, there is still much to be done. They acknowledged all Australians deserve to share in the benefits that a quality education system has to offer.
Ministers noted the gap between outcomes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Of particular concern was that attendance rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are not only lower, but are declining at a time of increased funding.
Ministers welcomed the opportunity to meet jointly, and supported an ongoing dialogue between them and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education leaders. Ministers committed senior officials to continue collaboration with a focus on learning lessons from effective positive place-based initiatives.
