Bek’s business is bloomin’

Small business owner Rebecca Gerstner received assistance from Australian Small Business Advisory Services to improve her digital capability and grow her business, to reach more customers and broaden her products and services.

Rebecca started her online florist in 2009 with the aim of providing the Goulburn community with fresh flowers and gift deliveries.

“As time went on, the business grew and I started to do weddings, events and corporate packages,” Rebecca said.

“It became apparent that I needed help with marketing. To optimise my website, I also needed to develop a strategy around that.”

Making a digital transformation is easier said than done though, especially for busy small business owners.

That’s where Tanya Creer from the Australian Small Business Advisory Services (ASBAS) Digital Solutions program stepped in.

ASBAS provides low-cost digital training and advice, tailored specifically for small businesses.

“I first met Rebecca when she came to me looking for help with some teething problems based around her website,” Tanya said.

“She had started a really awesome business but she needed a strategy for managing cash flow and building her customer base to take her business to the next stage.

“A lot of small businesses especially struggle with websites, online selling and social media marketing. That’s where I can step in to help clarify these issues and find solutions.”

For Rebecca, the assistance and advice has been invaluable.

“It has massively impacted the business and helped so much. It has eliminated so much stress, and freed me up to grow the business further,” Rebecca said.

Deloitte Access Economics’ Connected Small Businesses 2017 shows Australian small to medium businesses (SMBs) are becoming more digitally engaged over time. The study found that SMBs with advanced levels of digital engagement are 50 per cent more likely to be growing revenue and earn 60 per cent more revenue per employee.

“These days, to not have a website, social media presence or an e-commerce platform means that many customers simply won’t find you,” Rebecca said.

“There’s a lot in the pipeline for Bek’s Bloomz – we want to specialise in events and start outsourcing more to other small businesses.

“This is really possible because of the work I have done with Tanya. I couldn’t appreciate it more!”
