Prior to receiving Career Transition Assistance, Catherine had a long career in nursing but when this finished she spent over two years looking for work. She didn’t have the technology skills she needed to be as effective as she could in finding work and her self-esteem suffered.
“I felt a bit angry that I actually found myself unemployed,” Catherine said.
Career Transition Assistance Coordinator in Somerset, Joanne Easton, said that the program is tailored to a person’s needs. Participants can receive support to increase their confidence and motivation, help them understand their local job market and tailor their applications accordingly, and assistance to develop their ICT skills and digital literacy.
Joanne explained it is designed to help older job seekers build their skills and confidence to become more competitive in their local labour market.
“Having someone walking beside you and reminding you of how capable you are, helping you keep on track, helping you with your résumés and your cover letters — it just gives you that momentum to keep trying,” Joanne said.
Catherine said that after only a few weeks she had learned a range of contemporary job seeking skills — including writing targeted emails and formatting cover letters — and quickly received a job offer.
She is now working as a full-time early childhood educator.
“I would thoroughly recommend the CTA program. The course is completely suited to everyone’s needs,” Catherine said.
Career Transition Assistance is currently available to people aged 50 years or older, who are registered with a jobactive provider in one of five employment regions — Somerset in Queensland, Ballarat in Victoria, Central West in New South Wales, Adelaide South in South Australia, and Perth North in Western Australia.
The program will be expanded nationally from 1 July 2019 and will be available for people aged 45 years and older.
