Jobs fairs give attendees the chance to explore employment opportunities in their local region, bringing together employers, training providers and recruiters all in one place. People seeking work can talk directly to a range of employers about the skills they are looking for and find out about available training and job opportunities.
Also on offer are workshops and information sessions, where people can get hands-on help with their résumé, learn about what jobs are on the rise locally, get tips on preparing for an interview, or talk to employers about what they are looking for in a potential employee.
Jobs fairs were held in Devonport in Tasmania, Moorabbin, Sunshine and Broadmeadows in Victoria, Mandurah in Western Australia, and Mareeba in Far North Queensland.
The Melbourne North Jobs Fair, at Broadmeadows on Friday 19 October, attracted record numbers. More than 4,600 attendees turned out on the day to visit 56 exhibitors with more than 1,600 jobs on offer.
With so many people benefitting from the jobs fairs held in 2018, planning is now under way by the Department of Jobs and Small Business for jobs fairs across the country in 2019.

Moorabbin: 2780 attendees, 51 exhibitors, 1521 jobs on offer
Sunshine: 3615 attendees, 47 exhibitors, 1428 jobs on offer
Mandurah: 775 attendees, 43 exhibitors, around 500 jobs on offer
Broadmeadows: 4626 attendees, 56 exhibitors, 1640 jobs on offer
Mareeba: 250 attendees, 18 exhibitors, 39 jobs on offer.
Total attendees: 12,848
Jobs fairs are part of the Government’s Stronger Transitions package and the Job Change initiative. Stronger Transitions supports retrenched workers in regions affected by large-scale redundancies to find new employment. Job Change provides mature age Australians and job seekers with practical assistance to reskill, stay in the workforce or find a new job, and enjoy the economic and social benefits that employment brings.
