This is one of the findings from a research report which draws on results from the Department of Jobs and Small Business’ Survey of Employers’ Recruitment Experiences.
Online recruitment sites and job boards are the platforms most commonly used by employers in 2016-17, with 49% of job vacancies.

In Figure 2, data from 2015 to 2017 also includes unemployed persons who looked at job ads in a newspaper or on a noticeboard.
Company websites accounted for 13% of vacancies.
The research also found there has been a sharp rise in the use of social media for recruitment over the past four years, up from just two per cent of vacancies in 2013-14 to nine per cent in 2016-17.
The Department’s Labour Market Analyst, Ivan Neville, said online recruitment is popular with employers for its ability to reach a large audience.
‘The wide and increasing use of online recruitment is mainly due to its ability to connect large groups of users,’ Ivan said.
‘Job seekers use online recruitment to access the substantial number of vacancies advertised, while employers use online recruitment to tap into the large pool of potential candidates.’
The prevalence of online recruitment was also reflected in job seekers’ tendencies to look for jobs online. According to data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, about nine out of 10 unemployed people now use the internet to search for jobs, compared with 56% in 2004.
The report also found that vacancies for higher-skilled jobs were more likely to be advertised online than lower-skilled jobs. Approximately 69% of higher-skilled jobs were advertised online, while 62% of medium-skilled jobs and 50% of lower-skilled jobs were advertised online.
The location of employers and the size of the business also had a bearing on the usage of online recruitment, with employers in major cities advertising 66% of vacancies online, and 77% of vacancies from large businesses (100+ employees) promoted online.
