Videos billed to take young people far

Seven new short videos have been added to the Job Jumpstart website to help young people prepare for employment and land a great job. 

Addressing some common frustrations and worries experienced by young job hunters, the videos offer realistic and practical advice to help young people take steps to achieve their career goals.

The videos’ take on job hunting aims to engage and motivate young people, recognising that looking for work can be a difficult time for them.

The videos tackle the things that young people tend to worry about, like entering the workforce for the first time and engaging with employers. They cover topics like building work experience, writing a cover letter, finding a pathway to reach your career goals and being competitive when looking for work.

One video, 'Got a goal? Got to find a pathway', helps job seekers identify the series of steps they need to take to land their goal job – like getting work experience in the field, volunteering or studying.

‘What do employers want?’ explains how to highlight the skills that match what an employer is looking for, while ‘You got this’ provides advice on how to stay motivated in the face of rejection, like asking for feedback, volunteering to gain new skills, and networking with the right people.

In developing the videos, Department of Jobs and Small Business partnered with the Foundation for Young Australians to find out the best way to communicate with young people on employment matters.

Their research showed that many young people engage better with visual material and a humorous approach keeps them engaged and motivated.

Rob Willmett from the Department of Jobs and Small Business said the Job Jumpstart team is always looking at ways to improve how they communicate with young people.

“We want our users to feel that the website understands them and their needs, including their frustrations and challenges,” Rob said.

“We regularly meet with young people and listen to their stories, frustrations and concerns about their employment future and reflect their needs in the materials available on the website.”

The videos complement the array of resources already available on the Job Jumpstart website, which is a one-stop-shop employment planning and job search service for young people.

With over 135,000 visitors in the last year alone, the site is popular with school leavers and in-school career advisors and offers insights from employers to help young people prepare for work.
