The Direct Measure of Income Refinement Working Group (Working Group) has been established to provide advice on how new data could be used to explore possible refinements to the direct measure of income (DMI) methodology. The Working Group is not undertaking a review of the DMI methodology.
Further work will be undertaken to ensure that the direct measure of income remains the most reliable and robust measure to determine non-government school funding. This further work will be undertaken in partnership with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Taxation Office, Department of Social Services, key non-government sector representatives and relevant academic experts.
As whole of government data is expected to grow and expand in the coming years, further work will be undertaken to explore how innovations in the use and availability of additional data could be used to further refine the accuracy of the direct measure of income.
This work is likely to explore refinements to ensure that specific cohorts within school communities are better represented in the data, to continue to ensure that more Commonwealth funding is provided to schools and students who need it the most. The Terms of Reference will be available shortly.
