Macleay College’s withdrawal of Journalism courses

Macleay College advised students and teachers by email on Friday 11 March 2022 at 5.15pm that the College will be withdrawing its Diploma of Journalism and Bachelor of Journalism courses, including several options for new and existing students. We understand that the withdrawal of a course can be a particularly stressful time for enrolled students, and we encourage students to work with Macleay College to find a suitable outcome.

The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) advises that Macleay College has an obligation to place all affected students in an alternative course or provide a refund or recredit.

If you are a domestic student, Macleay College is obligated to help you under the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (for HELP Loan students) and Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 (for up-front fee-paying students), by either:

  • Arranging for you to continue your studies in a suitable alternative course at Macleay College or with another provider, or
  • Refunding you if you have paid up-front fees for any education and training that you have not received, or
  • Recrediting your HELP loan for any education and training not provided.

If you are an international student, Macleay College is obligated to help you under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000, by either:

  • Arranging for you to continue your studies in a suitable alternative course at Macleay College or with another provider, or
  • Refunding you if you have paid up-front fees for any education and training that you have not received.

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) is seeking further information about the provider’s decision and support it is offering to its affected students. Further information can be found at TEQSA statement: Macleay College withdrawal of journalism courses

TPS is in place to support students where an education provider is unable to commence or continue to provide the course they are enrolled in. TPS will assist students to find alternative courses or will provide those eligible with a refund or recredit if Macleay College cannot provide these solutions first.  Affected students can find further information on the following TPS web pages:

Macleay College has given affected students the option to withdraw from the course before the March 18, 2022 census date so as to avoid accumulating further HELP debt.  If you are considering doing this, you should keep in mind that you can withdraw from individual units of study without withdrawing from the entire course. If you withdraw from the entire course, then Macleay’s obligation to find you an alternative course may not apply and the TPS cannot assist you.

If you are an affected student, please contact Macleay College to discuss your options and check the TPS web links above relevant to your circumstances. If Macleay College is unable to assist you, you should contact:
