How we work and the composition of our workforce continues to evolve. Having the right policy settings to adapt quickly to these changes is key to Australia’s future prosperity.
The National Workforce Strategy 2022–27
The National Workforce Strategy provides a framework to inform and shape the development of workforce policy and sector-specific workforce strategies across Commonwealth agencies. The Strategy has five principles to guide a more coordinated and consistent approach to addressing workforce issues:
- Use data to create transparency of the current and future workforce
- Equip Australians with in-demand skills and focus employment services on outcomes
- Remove barriers and disincentives to work
- Activate industry to design and drive change
- Target migration to fill skills and labour gaps.
The Department of Education, Skills and Employment's Workforce Taskforce will work with government agencies to ensure their sector-specific strategies are built on a strong evidence base and are coordinated across agencies, in line with broader Government priorities and actions.
The National Workforce Strategy sets out six Workforce Foundations which outline key workforce programs to address workforce issues. These foundations will ensure that Australians have in-demand skills, the opportunities to find and keep work, and will support more targeted action through sector-specific workforce strategies to help meet industry’s workforce needs.
Workforce Action Plan
The Workforce Action Plan sets out the strategies and initiatives, stakeholder engagement and research, and governance and reporting that will take place through to 2022-24 to help develop individual sector-based strategies.
Sector-specific workforce strategies
Sector-specific workforce strategies play a critical role in developing Australia’s workforce. The National Workforce Taskforce is collaborating with Commonwealth departments and agencies to develop and renew sectoral workforce strategies which will align with the National Workforce Strategy’s principles, priorities and actions to reflect the national framework. Sector-specific workforce strategies provide a targeted and tailored approach to the unique challenges and opportunities experienced in each sector.
Dashboard and Resources
The Dashboard and Resources section brings together key pieces of data which help provide a picture of Australia's workforce, including reporting on labour market figures, labour force demographics, skills mismatches, and the employment services caseload.
